Soul Searching

I am saddened to say that I've deleted one of the first women that I met on a blog, due to her bumper sticker on facebook. I knew she was an Obama supporter and we seemed to get by that and remain friends. She is progressive, an amazing person who loves animals, music and she recently went through the death of her beautiful mother, who she had taken care of and nursed at home.

This woman is someone I love, respect and admire.

That's why this sucks.

For those of you that are offended by the Obama poster on the right and are calling it racist, that's par for the course. It's a pan of the original poster here:

Remember the remarks about typical white people, clinging to their guns and religion? Is it racist to put them down? Or do you have to be black to experience racism?

Or do you have to be black to experience racism?

A lot of analysts of racism would say, yes, you do. Racism is a systematic thing; it is not the same as prejudice, which is a psychological condition. It's prejudice plus systematic institutional bias. Also, just because something is "par for the course" doesn't mean it's not racist, or can't be read as such.

I'm not saying that you are being racist, merely that this is a response you'd get from lots of people, and from probably millions of black Americans.

This has been the ugliest primary season I can remember, honestly. Hardly anyone is treating anyone else fairly, and feeling appears to have replaced thinking almost universally.

Chet,

From Wikipedia:
Racism, by its simplest definition, is discrimination based on racial group. One with racist beliefs might hate certain groups of people according to their race (i.e., bigotry), or in the case of institutional racism, certain racial groups may be denied rights or benefits. Racism typically starts with, though is rarely confined to the assumption that there are taxonomic differences between different groups of people. Prejudices on other grounds would strictly categorize as discrimination to national or regional origin, religion, occupation, social status or some other distinction.

And you are right. This has been a brutal primary.

Wikipedia is handy, but it's not authoritative. As I said, many analysts of racism and a LOT of people of colour would agree that racism is by definition institutional and systematic. I'd say that sexism is, too, which is why it's ridiculous for men to start whining about sexism against them, as some occasionally do.
